Mass spectrometry is an analytical method that determines the mass of molecules and provides information about their structure and concentration.

1. Sample preparation:
The blood sample is prepared for mass spectrometry. This involves various steps such as the separation of proteins, lipids and other molecules.

2. Ionization:
In this step, the molecules in the sample are ionized by applying electrical charges to them. This can be done by various techniques such as electrospray ionization or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI).

3. Acceleration:
The ionized molecules are accelerated by an electric field. This causes them to acquire a speed that is proportional to their mass.

4. Separation:
The accelerated ions are then passed through a magnetic field or a mass analyzer. Due to their different masses, the ions are deflected differently, causing separation.

5. Detection:
The separated ions are detected by a detector that records the quantity and mass of the ions. This allows a mass spectrum to be created.

6. Data analysis:
The mass spectra obtained are then analyzed. This includes identifying the molecules based on their mass and quantifying their concentration.
