There are probably thousands of suppliers of dietary supplements. Unfortunately, many of them do not adhere to the legal requirements and thus ruin the reputation of reputable suppliers, which also includes us.
The importance of supplement labeling
Supplement labels play a crucial role in providing you with information about the ingredients and recommended use. Reading the labels carefully and correctly will allow you to choose the right products and ensure that you are getting the right nutrients for you. At the same time, you can also expose dubious suppliers relatively quickly.
No prior official inspection
Food supplements, also known as supplements, include vitamins, minerals, herbal substances and various other vital substances that may be sold as food supplements by law.
Important: The Federal Office of Public Health does not check the safety and efficacy of supplements in advance, as Swissmedic does with medicinal products, but only when complaints are received. This makes it all the more important to us that you trust your manufacturer and that you can read and understand a label correctly.
1. Product name and brand:
The product name should be clear and unambiguous in order to identify the supplement. The manufacturer's brand should also be clearly visible so that you can easily identify the product.
2. No promises of a cure:
By law, food supplements are intended to maintain the health of healthy people. If you are promised a cure for a disease, it is better to stay away from the products.
3. Ingredients:
The list of ingredients is one of the most important aspects of the label. The ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. This means that the ingredient that is present in larger quantities is listed first. This helps you to recognize which substances are present in larger quantities and which may be present in smaller quantities.
You will find that conventional products consist to a large extent only of fillers, coating agents, colorants, anti-caking agents, etc. The active ingredient, which is why you are actually buying the product, then only makes up a very small part.
Here is an example of a conventional vitamin D3 tablet from the supermarket. Cholecalciferol (=vitamin D3) is at the bottom of the descending list of ingredients. This means that it makes up the smallest part of the tablet. Everything else is an unnecessary additive.😫
At indyvit, we only use maltodextrin as a flow improver and do not use any other additives.
3. Nutritional information:
The nutritional information provides information about the nutritional composition of the supplement. They are usually displayed in tabular form. Here you will find information on the amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates and fiber, but this is optional.
More important is the information on vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients per daily serving. Make sure that this information always contains the amount in g, mg or mcg per daily dose and that the % of the recommended daily dose is also listed for vitamins and minerals.
It is also essential that the ingredients and their amount are tailored to your individual needs and the intended use of the supplement.
4. Recommended daily dose:
The recommended daily dose indicates how much of the supplement you should take per day to achieve the desired results. This amount must not be exceeded.
At indyvit, this dosage is based on the specific information you gave us when we created your customized supplement. With conventional mass products, the amounts you should take per day correspond in the best case to the average population.
5. allergy and warning information:
Allergy information is extremely important to highlight potential allergens. If you are allergic to certain ingredients, you should check this list carefully to make sure that the product is safe for you.
The law also specifies exactly how much of which substance must be labeled with which warning. In the case of magnesium, for example, a warning must be printed on the packaging that magnesium supplements can have a laxative effect if the recommended daily dose exceeds 250 mg of magnesium. This also helps you to distinguish between reputable and dubious suppliers.
6. Best-before date:
The best-before date indicates until when the product retains its effectiveness. Conventional products (often tablets or effervescent tablets) are sometimes produced years before you buy them. If you buy a standard product in the supermarket or pharmacy today, it may well have been produced somewhere in the world 2-3 years ago and stored since then.
Indyvit always produces your customized formula fresh. When your indyvit arrives at your home, it is usually less than 3-5 days old.
7. Storage recommendations:
The storage recommendations on the label must be followed in order to maintain the quality and effectiveness of the supplement. Most products must be stored in a cool, dry place and out of the reach of children.
8. Directions for use:
The directions for use describe how the supplement should be taken. This may include the recommended time of day or the optimal intake with or without food. Follow these instructions to achieve the best possible results.
9. Mandatory information:
Dietary supplements must always mention that they are not a substitute for a healthy and balanced diet.
10. Manufacturer information:
The label should also contain information about the manufacturer or distributor of the product. Here you will find contact information and, if necessary, a website or telephone number for support in case of questions or concerns.
The country in which the product was manufactured must also be listed. The further away the country of production, the more caution is required.
By carefully reading and understanding the elements on the label, you can be sure that you are receiving a high-quality supplement that complies with Swiss law. Of course, this information is not exhaustive and the exceptions prove the rule.
You can be guided by the fact that more information and more transparency are generally a good sign. It can show that the provider has nothing to hide.
